As of October 6, 2026.

The short answer

  • Extended your 2025 return? File by October 15, 2026.

  • More time to file. Not more time to pay.

  • 2025 tax was generally due April 15, 2026.

  • Unpaid tax can already owe interest and late-payment penalties.

Why October 15 exists

  • Most returns are due April 15.

  • A six-month extension moves 2025 filing to October 15, 2026.

  • Request by the April due date. No reason required.

  • Use Form 4868, IRS Free File, or pay online marked as an extension.

  • Filing time and payment time are different.

Who files an extension

  • Request by April and you get the automatic extension.

  • Some get a short delay without asking (for example, out of the country on the due date).

  • Disaster relief can move deadlines too.

  • No April request? October 15 is not a free pass. File and pay soon.

How common it is

  • Extensions are common.

  • About one in eight returns filed Form 4868 in FY 2022 (IRS Pub 6292).

What payments are due when

  • 2025 tax due: generally April 15, 2026, even with an extension. Interest runs from then.

  • Extended return due: October 15, 2026. Pay any balance when you file.

  • 2026 estimates (if you pay them): April 15, June 15, Sept. 15, 2026, and Jan. 15, 2027. Not the Oct. 15 deadline.

  • October 15 does not restart last year's unpaid balance.

  • Late pay but file by Oct. 15: you can still owe April interest and late-payment penalty.

  • Miss Oct. 15 while you still owe: late-filing penalty can stack. Pay what you can. Ask your preparer if the balance is large.

Questions to ask before October 15

  • Did I (or my preparer) request an extension by April 15, 2026?

  • Is any April balance still unpaid?

  • Do I have W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, and corrections?

  • Am I mixing Oct. 15 filing with a 2026 estimate date?

  • If I still owe, how will I pay?

  • Review these with the person who handles your return.
